VDOT says clearing of downed trees and debris from the Jan. 3 winter storm is complete along Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area, allowing crews to focus on finishing debris removal on along major and minor highways in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

Currently, more than 1.1 million cubic meters of tree debris has been picked up since the storm, representing more than 21,000 truckloads. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) estimates that about 1.5 million cubic yards of debris will be picked up by the end of the cleanup operation in the Fredericksburg district, which is expected to continue through July.

A dozen crews are picking up debris from the state’s right-of-way in the four affected counties.

Debris has been identified along more than 840 secondary roads in Caroline, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.

Teams visit roads that carry the heaviest traffic first, in most cases. To date, crews have prioritized debris removal along I-95, major highways, and priority secondary roads.

With Interstate Pickup now complete and 75% of primary routes complete, additional crews can move to secondary routes, which are routes numbered 600 and up. About 20% of secondary roads with roadside debris in Caroline, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania are currently complete.

Work will continue until debris has been cleared from the state right-of-way along all affected roads.

Motorists should be mindful of mobile work zones in affected counties, with lane closures as needed. Crews use heavy, slow-moving construction machinery to pick up debris along shoulders and medians.

During and immediately after the January 3 winter storm, crews cleared downed trees and debris from traffic lanes to reopen roads as quickly as possible. Crews cut large tree limbs into loose pieces and pushed them onto shoulders and along the state right-of-way to provide space for snow plows and trucks applying the treatment materials.
