“When you hear about Syracuse, New York, it’s often like the drop of a weather-related joke,” Lauren Levine Corriher wrote for American news. “However, the region has much more to offer than just snowdrifts and muddy water. Syracuse is more affordable than many other major metropolitan areas in the United States, making it a popular place to live for families and retirees. Young professionals also enjoy the area, both for its prices and because there is plenty to do.
Rochester and Buffalo also made the top 50, placing No. 42 and No. 45 overall. New York City, the only other metro on the list, ranked 120th in the nation.
Huntsville, Alabama had the highest overall score in the United States at 7.0 with high marks for value, labor market and net migration. The rest of the top 20 US cities all had scores between 6.8 and 6.5.
According to the methodology, the rankings were based on data analyzing factors such as average salary, unemployment rates, median household income, housing costs, crime rates, health care, commuting times , air quality, US Census breakdowns of the number of people traveling to and from each city, and a “desirability” survey asking respondents where they would prefer to live.
