Blue Mountain Resort in Palmerton has announced the opening date for its snow sports.

The resort said the official opening for snow sports is December 3 for enthusiasts of all ages, from beginners to expert skiers, snowboarders and snow tubers.

Blue Mountain Resort is home to one of the largest snowmaking systems in the country, allowing its teams to work more efficiently with the warmer weather on the east coast.

Snowmaking consists of three main components: water, air, and electricity, and Blue Mountain can pump 14,000 gallons of water per minute down slopes and convert it to snow.

This season the resort added three new 350hp / 1000gpm pumps increasing the snowmaking water pumping capacity, increasing the water pressure at the top of the mountain to use the latest snowmaking technology low power consumption / high capacity and installing two new additional cooling towers to maximize the snow window.

The result is that more of the 40 pistes with 16 ski lifts should be able to open earlier this season.

Seven of the 40 trails are slated to open on December 3, including: Easy Out, Vista, Midway, Burma, Come Around Park, Lower Main Street, and School Hill.

What’s new for the 2021/2022 season?

• Snow Tubing Park spanning 24 to 46 lanes, making it the largest and fastest snow tubing park in the country

• Fully automated snowmaking and LED lighting on the 40th mountain trail for excellent night skiing until 9 p.m.

• Fun and inviting new food trucks added to takeout choices including Tipsy Taco, Hoppy Trails and Cheesy Supper
