Saturday’s snowstorm wreaks havoc in eastern Montana

BILLINGS – Just 10 days after the last big snowstorm, the state of Montana is battered again. Not so much in Billings where Saturday saw mostly rain, but further east it was blizzard conditions for the majority of Saturday.

“Some galleries are probably two and a half to three feet high,” said Dana Williams, a rancher south of Broadus.

Williams said her satellite internet connection was intermittent for most of the day due to snow. It started raining at the Williams ranch Friday night, but by 1 a.m. Saturday snow was falling.

“Elsewhere the ground is a bit bare just from the blowing I guess. But it was really wet down there. I think we had over an inch of rain before it turned to snow. So it’s going to be wet,” Williams said. .

Transportation officials in Montana and Wyoming closed several roads Saturday due to snow. Notably, Interstate 90 is closed from Hardin to Ranchester, Wyoming, and I-90 is also closed in Wyoming from Sheridan east to Sundance.

More road closures in Montana: Highway 212 between Crow Agency and the state line is closed, along with all of Highway 59 from Miles City south to the state line.

There is no timetable yet for the reopening of the roads, as the bad weather is expected to persist overnight.

The good news is the moisture the storm will bring with it. Williams has a ranch south of Broadus and said she hopes this storm will leave more moisture than the last one 10 days ago.

“We just haven’t had any moisture for probably a good year and a half. We’ve had two years of drought and two years of locusts. If we can turn it around that would be great,” Williams said.
