Great Smoky Mountains Natl. To park – Update (1/22):

Laurel Creek Road is now open. Watch out for snow and ice. Cades Cove Loop Road will open at standard time.

Many roads in the Great Smoky Mountains were closed Friday, Jan. 21, as cold weather set in across eastern Tennessee.

Officials said part of Newfound Gap Road, between Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Cherokee, North Carolina, was closed due to ice and snow. The road often closes for long periods due to dangerous weather conditions.

Parts of Little River Road, the Sugarlands Visitor Center in Townsend Wye, and Laurel Creek Road were also closed on Monday.

Foothills Parkway West, for its entire length, and Foothills Parkway East were also closed due to weather conditions, officials said. Cherokee Orchard in Twin Creeks was also closed, officials said.

“Travelling in the park during the winter can be dangerous,” said Dana Soehn, spokesperson for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “And so, we often close many of our roads when they get slippery, or we have icy areas that just don’t get the sun.”

Information on the reopening of roads was not immediately available.

Officials also said people can call Great Smoky Mountains officials at 865-436-1200. By pressing 1 in the menu after logging in, they could listen to the latest update on road conditions in the mountains.
