An innkeeper said the phones kept ringing as people hunkered down for Saturday night.

BOONE, NC — Snowstorms expected in Boone on Sunday aren’t keeping travelers away. Instead, hotels and other accommodations are reporting a busy weekend with many travelers from out of town.

“The phones kept ringing,” said Ann Alexander, who is an innkeeper at the Loville House Inn in Boone. “We are also on Airbnb. Between the two, it was a little crazy.

Alexander said she was full throughout the weekend and many of her travelers came from the Charlotte area to take advantage of the snow. While Boone has had a snowstorm before this season, Alexander said this time around was busier.

“It’s the closest mountain to us, so we came from Atlanta because we wanted to try snowboarding,” said a traveler staying at Loville House.

“Just be careful and drive carefully because it’s going to be icy,” said Ole Christian Galaas-Olsen, whose family owns the hostel. Galaas-Olsen said the hostel is solar-powered, so it has the ability to continue operating even when the power goes out. However, he makes sure he is well stocked with salt and sand.

As travelers come to Boone to enjoy the ski resorts and restaurants, emergency responders are warning people to avoid driving. Due to COVID-19, teams are down and response times may be affected.

“We manage about 75 or 80 percent of the staff,” said Travis Chrisawn of the Watauga County branch of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. “It will take us a little longer to get to the secondary roads but we will get there and we will continue our snow removal operations until all the roads are clear.
