In pictures: Spring storm brings snow and disruption across the country

New Zealand woke up to a freezing morning on Tuesday as snow fell in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, causing road closures and crashes across the country.

Snow and ice made driving difficult in the mountainous suburbs of Dunedin, while the streets were littered with abandoned vehicles, many with visible damage to the panels.

Christchurch marked a “special occasion” for the city with the sea level snowfall on Christchurch’s New Brighton beach.

Meanwhile, due to high winds overnight, nearly 500 homes and businesses in the Far North experienced power outages on Tuesday morning, with blackouts in places including Kaitāia, Whangaroa and Hōreke.
