Hosting the Snow Bowl on Saturday in Arkansas City, the Cowley Collegiate Quiz Bowl teams faced off against seven colleges and 12 teams.
Allen, Coffeyville, Cowley, Garden City, Johnson, Redlands and Seward were represented with a total of 12 teams and 42 students competing.
“It was great to bring all of these teams together again – face to face,” said Dianne Flickinger, sponsor of the Cowley Collegiate Quiz Bowl.
The Redlands A team went undefeated (8-0) and finished just ahead of second place Garden City A (7-1). Coffeyville placed third (5-3), while Team Cowley B (4-4) rounded out the top four teams in the competition.
Johnson County’s Trenton Elliott finished first, while Cowley rookie Zane Hubble placed second.
Cowley College President Dr Dennis C. Rittle welcomed all of the teams and offered a few words of encouragement. He and Flickinger were delighted to see the level of volunteer participation from faculty and college staff moderating.
“Thanks to moderators Tim Kennedy, Shae Nichols, Debbie Phelps, Michael Christensen, Mark Flickinger, Greg Mink, Braidon Hughes and his wife, Lauren who helped with the score,” said Flickinger. “Thanks to Great Western Dining for providing lunch for everyone in the cafeteria. Special thanks to our babysitter, Charlotte, who made sure the place was ready for 62 guests.
The Cowley B team consisted of Zane Hubble, Ilia Belosludtsev (23rd), Shaybree Hanes (28th) and Iuliia Matselevich (40th).
The Cowley A team, which finished in 11th place, consisted of Jacob Denholm (11th), Melissa Henderson (25th), Shelby Fuqua (30th) and Olga Kostiakova (42nd).
Scorer Todd Ketron said this about the Snow Bowl. “I enjoyed the face-to-face interaction with the students a lot more than playing online with Zoom,” Ketron said.
Collegiate Quiz Bowl alumni markers Aidan Sanders and Symantha Shelton participated in the event.
Cowley’s next competition will be on January 22 for the NAQT Sectional Championships which will determine whether the team will compete at the National Championships in February.
“We’re sorry to hear that Olga and Iuliia will be leaving at the end of the semester,” said Flickinger. “We would like two more Cowley students to join the quiz bowl and keep two full teams.”
