Councilors ask to explore volunteer response to May 21 storm

A review of how the City of Ottawa handled the derecho storm that rocked the capital on May 21 may have an additional element.

County of Innes Laura Dudas presents a motion to Ottawa City Council asking staff to implement a more coordinated approach to emergency preparedness training and coordination with community organizations during emergencies following from last month’s storm.

County of Stittsville Glen Gower seconds the motion and says The Rob Snow Show with guest host David Smith on Monday, June 20 that there were so many people who wanted to help, but with factors such as the loss of internet service and cellular systems being overwhelmed, there should be a better way to move volunteers to where they are needed most.

“Is there a better way to organize people and have dedicated, committed volunteer phone numbers that we can contact for help,” Coun said. Gower. “Just looking at things like this. What haven’t we thought about or what has this storm shown us that we didn’t realize before so we can react better if something like this happens. reproduced.”

Storm cleanup efforts continue in Ottawa.
